SURKIN FEAT. M.I.A.
French producer Surkin has been teaming up with beloved singer M.I.A. for the track ‘The new international sound pt.II’ of his new EP GENER8ION, which was released this monday. Especially this track comes with an energetic and moving character which now got support by majestic and violent image sequences from the documentary ‘Dragon Girls’ directed by Inigo Westmeier (2013). The result is a bombastic but dramatic music clip with almost 26.000 students of Chinas largest Kung Fu school ‘Shaolin Tagou’. Boys and girls get trained to be the best Kung Fu fighters within national and international competitions or you could also say it with these words: with ruthless drill, children are being raised like their individuality doesn’t count a dime – they are only worth within the collective, which is everything!
Nice move of Surkin and M.I.A. to reanimate the intensive and impressive pictures of the heroic documentary with the tremendous vibe of their melody and voice, speaking up for the kids in China, republishing wrong thoughts of a childhood within a society which won’t give children time and space for themselves.
‘Dragon Girls’ tells the story of three Chinese Girls, training to become Kung Fu Fighters, far away from their families at the Shaolin Kung Fu School, located right next to the Shaolin Monastery in Central-China, place of origin of Kung Fu.Three girls in a crowd of 26.000 children, under pressure to conform to the norms and structures: they are turned into fighting robots and yet, if you look behind the curtain, you see children with dreams and aspirations…
